Teeing Off for Children with Cancer at ECLARO Classic for Camp CARE
The U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills may be the golf tournament getting the most hype at the moment, but a certain tournament on another U.S. course is no doubt the outing driven by the most hope: the third annual ECLARO Golf Classic Benefitting Camp CARE.
Teeing off once again at the picturesque Carolinas Lakes Golf Club in North Carolina, the event brought together duffers and scratch players alike, all looking forward to a great day of golf, but even more so looking ahead to the good their participation would do. Every spring the event raises funds and awareness for Camp CARE (Cancer Ain’t Really the End) and its efforts to help children who have or have had cancer (and their families) in the Charlotte area and bring joy into their lives with a weeklong summer camp experience and year-round activities.
“This event is highly anticipated each year, and our friends from ECLARO, along with all of the participants, give so generously knowing they are making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children and their families,” says Camp CARE Executive Director Carrie S. Keuten. “Thanks to supporters like ECLARO, Camp CARE’s week-long camp experience and monthly activities are provided completely free of charge.”
The summer camp and activities throughout the year are for children in all stages of the treatment journey: on- or off-treatment, in remission or fighting relapse, no symptoms or side effects and those with physical and mental challenges. Staffed 24/7 by medical professionals, Camp CARE’s summer camp welcomes children with cancer and their siblings from ages 6-16 with “the chance to get away from the realities of living with cancer while still being under medical supervision at all times.” Campers get to participate in activities like tubing, arts & crafts, swimming, a talent show, dance and more.
But, as Camp CARE states, “Most importantly, campers will have the chance to meet new friends and connect with others who are undergoing the same things that they are going through, while having a great time away from home for a week.”
That notion right there is at the heart of every swing and putt on the course, supporting the Camp CARE mission of “giving children with cancer the chance to simply be kids,” says Keuten. “Enjoying the outdoors, building friendships and making unforgettable memories.”
In addition to summer camp, the organization also offers Camp CARE Connections throughout the year, open to all children and families, even those who have not attended camp. These activities vary each year, but include events such as corn mazes, ice skating, a circus and more. The annual holiday party takes place each December and is always a fun time for everyone to reconnect with friends from camp.
“It’s a privilege to be part of this event and to be able to contribute our support to Camp CARE,” said ECLARO’s Shaun Sullivan as he helped put the finishing touches on setting up this year’s outing. “The dedication of the Camp CARE team and the difference they make in children’s lives are immeasurable. To be able to play even a small part in bringing a smile to child’s face is an honor.”
Throughout the day at Carolinas Lakes, the golfers drove home that point with every smile of their own. Mark Twain famously called gold “a good walk spoiled,” but this event recast that as great gathering for a great cause made truly special.
“A splendid day on the golf course is much like an amazing day at Camp CARE — enjoying the outdoors, making new friends and creating lifelong memories,” Keuten says. “The ECLARO Golf Classic truly demonstrates that the Right People are the Answer.”
