America at 250: What 50 State Mottos Teach Us About the Right People
ECLARO wasn’t around in 1776, but our underlying philosophy certainly was: the Right People are the Answer. The Declaration of Independence articulated timeless ideals of equality, dignity, freedom and the pursuit of happiness in forging the framework upon which the United States of America would create itself over the next 250 years, and at the heart of it all was the idea that the people would make it work.
While written in a different era, for a different purpose, the Declaration’s virtues remain strikingly relevant. The same ideas about human potential can help build exceptional organizations in any time.
The Right People are not defined by pedigree or title. They are defined by character, capability, caring, contribution. When we’re talking about the Right People, it’s never just about qualified professionals. It’s about individuals who elevate organizations, strengthen culture, create long-term impact and give their all to their personal success as well as that of their team.
These principles have been part of the American story since day one. You’ll see them alive and well in every one of our 50 states today.
Of course, if you spend enough time traveling across America and you'll notice something else: every state has its own personality. Texas does things differently than Vermont. New York moves at a different pace than Wyoming. Even the state mottos tell their own stories. Some celebrate resilience, others innovation, others independence. Yet somehow, all 50 states, with all their differences, come together to form something stronger than any single one could possibly be alone.
That's not just a lesson in building a nation celebrating its semiquincentennial (say that three times fast). It's a blueprint for what great organizations look like and how they create themselves, grow and thrive by putting the Right People.

Taken together, these 50 mottos tell a remarkable story. They champion independence, integrity, resilience, courage, optimism, purpose. Some speak to personal responsibility. Others remind us of our obligation to something greater than ourselves. But they all point to the same enduring truth: Lasting success is built by individuals who are empowered to be true to themselves while remaining committed to a shared mission.
That's what has made America work for 250 years, and it's what makes great organizations work, too. The strongest teams aren't made up of people who simply follow directions, nor are they built on individual achievement alone. They're built by people who take ownership, bring their best every day and understand that their greatest contributions come when they're working toward something bigger than themselves. That's the enduring lesson woven throughout our nation's history, and one that continues to shape every great team, every great organization and every great accomplishment.
Say it with us from sea to shining sea: the Right People are the Answer.
