Spreading Joy, Creating Hope: A Day with ECLARO's Project E-Care
Creating joy can be simple: a shared story, a game that drives away shyness, a child who laughs a little louder than they did an hour ago. Offering hope takes more work. And doing both can be transformational, as the ECLARO’s Project E-Care volunteers revealed after a day spent alongside the children and families of Alay Pag-Asa Christian Foundation in in the Philippines,
Children’s laughter carried through the small courtyard long before the program officially began on a humid Saturday morning in Mandaluyong City, the first hints of the happy day arriving early at Alay Pag-Asa as the Project E-Care volunteers settled in, unpacking art supplies, storybooks and a few hours of focused attention that many of these children rarely receive.
A Day at Alay Pag-Asa
Alay Pag-Asa Christian Foundation is a community-based NGO focused on supporting indigent children, youth and their families through holistic, sustainable and child-centered programs rooted in both education and faith. The organization runs initiatives such as educational and food-assistance programs, life group sessions and family development activities, all designed to create stability and possibility for children who might otherwise be left behind.

Moments That Stay with You
For Project E-Care volunteer Mae Opimo, the impact of the visit crystallized during a painting activity with a young girl. “During the painting session, I was assisting Natalia,” Opimo shares. “I saw how genuinely happy she was to receive the painting set, and she was so excited to draw. I was moved by how simple things could mean so much for someone.”
Another volunteer, Charisse Guan, found a deep sense of familiarity in the children’s faces. “I can relate to the kids at Alay Pag-Asa because I experienced it once in my childhood,” she says, recalling her own participation in an outreach program that combined play, stories and Bible lessons.
That lived experience made every activity feel deeply personal for Guan. She wasn’t just assisting with a program, she was standing on both sides of the story at once, someone who had received help and someone now choosing to give it.
Volunteers Receiving as Much as They Give
Volunteering recalibrates how people see their own lives, their opportunities and their responsibilities. The experience is “heartwarming,” in Opimo’s words, noting how the children’s genuine smiles and gratitude made her reflect on the environment she grew up in and the needs she never had to worry about.
Guan echoes this sentiment. “Engaging in charitable work always reminds me that I should be thankful and grateful for what I currently have, because there are people that struggle and fight their battles really hard just to survive a day,” she says.
For many volunteers, that recognition doesn’t fade when the event ends. Rather, it quietly reshapes how they show up at work, at home and in their communities.

What Children Notice That Adults Forget
One of the quiet strengths of Alay Pag-Asa’s approach is how it weaves moral and practical lessons into simple, accessible activities. During the storytelling segment, for example, volunteers and staff shared a tale centered on generosity, the danger of greed and the importance of kindness regardless of social standing.
“The storytelling gave a big impact to children because of the moral value they learned from it,” Guan recalls. “Be generous, not greedy, but most especially be kind to others no matter what their status in life is,”
Children may not remember every detail of a story, but they remember the way adults make space for them to ask questions, to laugh, to reflect and to participate.
One Day, Lasting Impact
From the outside, a volunteering day can look like a one-off event on a busy calendar. Inside a company, though, experiences like Project E-Care at Alay Pag-Asa quietly go to work on culture. Volunteers return with a different understanding of purpose, a clearer sense that empathy is not only a personal value but a strategic capability.
These days on the ground can reshape what people think real impact looks like. Systemic change may seem distant at times, yet showing up consistently, listening before acting and partnering with organizations that have walked with a community for years reveal how small, repeatable actions build trust, reinforce dignity and create room for people to push forward. Project E-Care’s efforts never end, and the opportunity to be part of it is ever-present.

“If you want to experience something new and meaningful by helping serve the community through volunteering, then this is it,” Opimo says. “Try it, even just for once and see how it goes. It’s really fun.”
Work Hard. Give Back. Have Fun. Those six words echo through the halls of ECLARO, a mantra and a mindset and an invitation all wrapped together.
“Don’t think twice, just go for it, because every second you spend volunteering will be reciprocated with love and joy,” Guan says. “And surely you will go back home with a light and fulfilled heart.”
